Staying up to date with online conversation is like watching the news or reading the papers. With real time feeds like twitter, it’s never been easier, however a tweet or comment an A List Conversationalist doth not make.
Call me old fashioned, but the principals of online conversation are similar to real life conversation. Interesting conversation is a combination of good manners, showing interest in others and knowing when to shut up.
The Five habits of an A List Conversationalist are:
Active Listening
Active listening is listening before jumping in with ill informed opinions. I recommend the 80/20 rule; 80% listening and 20% commenting is a good habit.
Abundant gratitude wins friends
Recently I expressed an opinion about someone’s video interviewing technique, without any regard for the interviewers feelings. While I stand by what I said, in hindsight it would have been helpful to thank him for his efforts. Expressing gratitude when others freely share information is a good habit.
Ask questions
Questions, surveys or polls are great conversation starters. Notwithstanding, be careful to mix up your content, as you want to keep friends wondering what your going to say next. Knowing what to ask, and when to ask is a good habit.
Agree to disagree
Disagreeing doesn’t mean disagreeable, so be careful not to kill conversation with defensive or obnoxious comments.
Conversation is all the more interesting for differences, therefore disagreeing without burning bridges is a good habit.
Acknowledge when the conversation is over
Some Moderators need to learn when to close a conversation. The most interesting conversations can be the shortest, whereas lengthy can turn into boring.
The best conversations lead into personal stories and anecdotes, therefore using comments to develop relationships is a good habit.
Finally, remember your conversations reveal your character, in which case subordinating the mouth to the ears displays your good habits.
